Hard Water Stain Removal in Bend, OR: Cloudy Glass That Won’t Come Clean
Sightline removes mineral deposits from windows, shower doors, and glass railings across Bend and Central Oregon. We test a small patch before we quote, tell you honestly which kind you have, and never sell you a clean that will not work.
The Real Cause
Bend Does Not Have Hard Water. So Why Is Your Glass Cloudy?
Nearly every window company in town blames Bend’s water. The City of Bend’s own figures say otherwise. City water measures 0.99 to 1.46 grains of hardness per gallon, which is soft to slightly hard under U.S. Department of the Interior and Water Quality Association standards.
If you are on city water and your glass is chalky white, your tap is not the culprit. Two other things almost always are.
Canal and Irrigation Water
A lot of Central Oregon irrigates from canals, not from the tap. Water delivered by the region’s irrigation districts is untreated surface water. It carries dissolved mineral and fine sediment straight onto whatever your sprinkler head reaches.
Private Wells
Homes past the city limits pull from private wells with far more mineral content than treated city water. We see the heaviest buildup in Deschutes River Woods, Tumalo, and out toward Terrebonne.
Why One Street Spots and the Next Does Not
Because the water source changes from property to property, not from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. Two houses on the same block can be on different systems.
The high desert then makes it worse. At this elevation, water sitting on glass in July evaporates fast. Fast drying concentrates the mineral instead of letting it run off, which is why south and west-facing windows take the worst of it.
Diagnose It
Will It Come Off, or Is the Glass Etched?
This is the only question that matters, and you can get most of the way to an answer yourself in thirty seconds.
The Wet Glass Test
Wet the cloudy area with plain water and look at it closely while it is still wet.
If the haze changes, softens, or partly disappears, the mineral is sitting on top of the glass. That comes off.
If it looks exactly the same wet as dry, the mineral has etched into the surface. Cleaning will not reverse that.
What Your Fingernail Adds
Run a fingernail across the spot. A raised, gritty roughness usually means deposit sitting on the surface. Smooth glass that still looks cloudy or pitted usually means etching.
Be careful with this one on its own. Badly weathered glass can feel rough and still be etched, so the two signals sometimes disagree. The wet test is the more reliable of the two.
Time Decides the Outcome
A spot that wipes off after one month can be permanent by month six. Mineral bonds harder the longer it sits, and Central Oregon sun speeds that up.
If you have noticed haze this season, deal with it this season.
The Patch We Test Before Quoting
We do not guess and we do not quote blind.
We apply restoration solution to a small section of the worst pane and watch what happens. Visible improvement means the deposit lifts and we can price the job properly. Little or no change means the glass has likely etched, and we tell you that before you have paid for anything.
You decide what happens next with real information, not a promise.

Shower Doors and Interior Glass
Shower glass is the same problem in a harder environment.
It gets wet several times a day, it rarely gets dried, and soap scum layers on top of the mineral so each one protects the other. Most shower doors have no protective coating at all.
That combination means shower glass etches faster than any window in the house. A door that has been foggy for two years is often past saving. One that clouded up last winter usually is not.
We treat shower glass the same way we treat windows. Test a patch, tell you honestly, then do the work. Most customers book it alongside a window cleaning, which saves a separate trip.
Avoid These
What Not to Try First
Vinegar. Works on light fresh spotting. Stalls completely on set deposits and does nothing at all to etched glass.
Razor blades. Covered above. This is how fixable glass becomes replacement glass.
Hose attachment window cleaners. These leave behind the exact mineral spots they are sold to prevent.
Abrasive household pads. Kitchen scrubbers scratch glass. So does baking soda used dry.
A whole house water softener. Advice you will find on almost every national page about this, and mostly wrong for Bend. If your house is on city water, a softener treats a problem you do not have. The fix here is the sprinkler, not the plumbing. If you are on a well, a softener may genuinely help, so it is worth checking which you are on before spending the money.
Prevention
How to Stop It Coming Back
Adjust the sprinklers. The single most effective thing you can do. Switch heads from spray to stream, angle them away from the house, and check that nothing is hitting glass during the hottest part of the day.
Water early. Water that lands at 6am and dries slowly leaves far less behind than water that lands at 2pm and bakes off in twenty minutes.
Dry shower glass. A squeegee kept in the shower takes ten seconds and prevents most of the buildup.
Catch it early. Fresh spotting comes off with a normal clean. That is the cheapest version of this job by a wide margin.
