Skylight Cleaning in Bend, OR | Cleaned From the Ground, Not From Your Roof

The Approach

How We Reach Your Skylights

Water-fed poles, up to 40 feet

A brush on an extendable pole carries purified water to the glass. That reaches most residential skylights in Bend, including two-storey homes and vaulted great rooms, without a ladder anywhere near the roofline.

We do not walk roofs

Two reasons, and the second one is about your house.

Walking a roof is where this trade gets people hurt. Wet shingles, frost, loose grit, and pitch all change the risk in a way that is not worth it for glass.

It also damages roofs. Foot traffic cracks tile, loosens shingle granules, and wears the surfaces you paid a roofer to install. A crew on your roof to clean a skylight can cost you more than the cleaning.

When a skylight cannot be reached

Some canโ€™t. Tree cover, roof geometry, distance from a stable surface, or power lines can all put a skylight out of range. When that happens, we look at the property, tell you what the options are, and let you decide. We would rather say no than attempt something unsafe.

Why Skylights Are Different

Skylights Get Dirtier Than Any Window in the House

They face straight up, which changes everything.

A vertical window sheds dust and gets rinsed every time it rains. A skylight collects. Anything falling out of the Central Oregon sky lands on it and stays there.

Juniper pollen and high desert dust. Pollen season starts here in late February when juniper begins to shed. On a vertical pane it streaks. On a skylight it settles and bakes.

Pine needles and cone debris. Out at Sunriver, Black Butte Ranch, and the wooded lots around Sisters, needles pack into the frame edges and the flashing channel. That is where they do damage, not on the glass.

Wildfire smoke film. Late summer smoke leaves an oily layer that smears when wiped dry. Skylights get the worst of it because they face the source.

Snow, ice, and winter grit. Snow sits on a low pitch skylight instead of sliding off. As it melts and refreezes, it drags grit across the glass and pushes meltwater into any seal that is already tired.

What We Look For

What We Notice While We Are Up There

Cleaning a skylight puts eyes on parts of your roof nobody looks at.

Things we flag:

  • Debris packed into the flashing channel, which is what blocks drainage and starts leaks
  • Cracked or dried seals around the frame
  • Condensation or fogging between panes, which means the seal has failed
  • Frames that have shifted or corroded
  • Acrylic domes that have yellowed or crazed from years of sun

We report these. We do not repair them. If something needs attention we will tell you plainly and point you to a roofer or a skylight specialist.

This matters more than it sounds. Most skylight leaks are not caused by the storm that revealed them. The problem was already there, sitting under debris, until enough water arrived to find it.

Interior Glass

Do You Clean the Inside of a Skylight Too?

Most people have never cleaned the inside of a skylight, because they canโ€™t reach it. Vaulted great rooms in Tetherow, Broken Top, Discovery West, and the cabins out toward Black Butte put interior glass fifteen to twenty-five feet above the floor, and dust settles on the inside surface too, itโ€™s the side you actually look at.

We clean interior skylight glass up to about 20 feet with our interior pole setup, where it can be safely reached. We check the height and access before the job and tell you if it needs specialist access rather than turning up and improvising.

Timing

How Often Should Skylights Be Cleaned in Bend?

Safety

Do Not Clean a Skylight From Your Roof

If you take one thing from this page, take this.

Never stand on the glass

A skylight is not built to hold weight, and it is not a work platform. Falls through skylights kill people every year.

Bend roofs are worse than they look

Frost sits on north facing pitches well past sunrise in winter. Metal roofing offers almost no grip. Loose grit on composition shingle behaves like ball bearings underfoot.

What is reasonable

On a single-storey home with a low skylight over a patio, an extension pole from the ground is a fair job to do yourself.

Anything that involves getting on the roof is not.

Coverage

Skylights We Clean

Fixed and vented glass units, operable and solar-powered skylights, tubular light tubes, acrylic and polycarbonate domes, ridge and barrel vault glass, and sunroom roof panels.

Acrylic domes need different handling from glass. UV at this elevation yellows and crazes acrylic over time, and abrasive cleaning makes it worse rather than better. We treat them accordingly.
